A family thing: York Catholic's Parrini siblings double up District 3 goldJoe and Lauren Parrini become first brother-sister combo to win District 3 golf titles in same year.
A storybook ending came true for the Parrini family Saturday during the District 3 Golf Championships at Briarwood Golf Club in York.On Briarwood West, York Catholic senior Lauren Parrini teed off in morning with a nine-stroke lead over Becca Graham of Boiling Springs.Over on Briarwood East, her brother Joe, a freshman, teed off with a two-stroke lead over York Catholic teammate Nick Geiman.By the end of their rounds, the senior and her freshman brother became District 3's first set of sibling champions crowned on the same day.Lauren Parrini took the Class AA girls' district title with a 13-stroke victory. Despite high winds and a wet course, Joe Parrini managed to play steady and consistent to finish his final round at 2 under, 4-under par for the tournament and a Class AA boys' title. "It is (Joe's) first time playing high school golf, and my last time," Lauren Parrini said. "It is really our only chance to be on a team together, and it's been a great time."At one point, Lauren Parrini held a 15-stroke lead. She said her coach, Bill Brander, came up halfway through her round. Brander told her that Joe was 3 under."I was telling people that I was more excited for him to win than me," she said. "I knew he had really stiff competition, and I knew that he could do it."Her little brother finished two shots ahead of Geiman, who won the YAIAA championship a week ago.On this day, the Parrinis were on top of District 3.For Class AA, at least.

Boys' Golfer of the Year
Nick Geiman, York Catholic, sr.: After four years as a mainstay on the Irish card, Geiman closed out his high school career with his best season yet. Finishing the season with a league-low 72.5 average, Geiman was the model of consistency, which was one of his main areas of focus in the off season. He shot a 71 at the YAIAA tournament to win the league title and tied for second at the District 3 Class AA tournament."I really worked a lot in the off season to hit a fade," Geiman said. "I used to always hit a draw and really wanted to get rid of the big miss for me, which is a hook to the right."Avoiding the big miss was exactly what Geiman did. His season consisted of rounds between 69 and 77, always avoiding the blow-up hole.Geiman carried that consistency to the second day of the PIAA tournament, when he teed of as part of the lead group. He finished Day 2 with a 73, the second-best second-round total in Class AA, good enough for a third-place finish."States were great," he said. "I had been thinking about winning it since August. My main goal was to give myself a chance to win. Through five holes on the second day, I was leading. It got to me right away. It was such a great experience to be there." In addition to his individual success, he helped lead the Irish to a third-place finish at the PIAA Class AA team tournament, plus the District 3 team title."It was great to have a team that was very competitive," he said. "We could have had a different lineup every win. Joe (Parrini) came in and had a great year and played great. Everyone really contributed, which made it special."Geiman has not chosen where he will attend college, but he plans to play golf and major in business administration or marketing.

Lancaster County Junior Golf Tour Hat trick sparks Will Riva to LCJGT win at Hawk Valley
Will Riva, a rising junior at Lancaster Catholic, opened the current Lancaster County Junior Golf Tour season with a victory at Overlook. After that tournament, he thanked his “lucky charm” — a white bucket hat that protects his pale skin, blonde hair and blue eyes from the sun.Riva, however, recently slept over at a friend’s house. But with Tuesday’s Golf, Etc., Lusk & Associates Junior at Hawk Valley drawing near, he realized there was something missing — his lucky charm.“I called him (and said), ‘Hey, I need you to bring that bucket hat. I need it,’ ” Riva said. When his friend arrived at Hawk Valley on Tuesday, Riva charged up to him and urgently asked, “Dude, you have my hat? I need it.”The exchange was made, and Riva was reunited with his lucky charm.Good thing, too. With the hat came Riva’s second LCJGT championship of the summer. After playing a stellar round of 36-37—73, Riva finished four strokes ahead of Ethan Cairns (39-38—77) and Patrick Neslund (36-41—77) for the crown.“To be honest, tee to green was the best I’ve ever played,” Riva said. “I hit 17 greens.”
